Hiking from Delimara to St.Thomas Bay

If you have never explored the South of Malta I suggest you prepare your hiking gear and gather up your hiking crew and embark on this amazing trail. I live in Zejtun and I am pretty familiar with the green areas this side of Malta has to offer. Yet after me and boyfriend finished this trail, I was left stunned with the numerous amazing views we saw every step of the way. So here is how our little adventure went down :

This is the trail we took.

We parked our car near the Delimara power plant and began our little adventure. We made our way through the fishing village of Marsaxlokk reaching what is known as Tas-Silg

Fort Delimara

A polygonal fort, built by the British between 1876 and 1888, as part of a chain of fortifications intended to protect Marsascala. Although the fort to this day is still standing and intact, it is in great urgent need of restoration as it is in great risk of collapse due to coastal erosion.

Delimara Lighthouse

This in fact an active lighthouse. It is the second lighthouse to be built on the Delimara point. Throughout the years it acted as a beacon to the Maltese shipping industry. It was restored and renovated by Din l-Art Helwa. It now consists of 2 storey apartments which serves as a holiday let accommodation. It has spectacular views of Marsascala port, Marsaxlokk and Birzebbuga. It is also equipped with roof mounted radars and aerials, used for coastal traffic control.

Once we reached the Lighthouse, we stopped for a water break and stepped up our pace. We knew that stunning beaches and breath-taking scenery were waiting for us on the next part of the trail.

Kalanka Bay

Photography enthusiasts will be thrilled with this beautiful geographic spot. Crowded during summer yet quiet and peaceful in Spring. It is ideal for snorkeling, swimming & exhilarating plunges in the sea.

St.Peter's Pool

This is one of the most beautiful & stunning natural swimming pools this island has to offer. The water is crystal clear with amazing azure & light green colours making it excellent for snorkeling & diving. In the peak of summer this area would be buzzing with activity.

Ras il-Fniek

This a point in Marsaxlokk, close to 'Il-Hofra z-Zghira'. I bet you have never heard of such a place. We discovered it by chance and I'm glad we didn't miss it. The view from the top of the cliffs is breath-taking. During summer, this area is very popular with boat owners. Unfortunately, it is difficult to access by foot or car.

Xrobb L-Ghagin

Dating back to the cold war era, this site served as the Deutschewelle Radio Station. Recently, this site was restored into a Nature Park by Nature Trust, were one can enjoy an afternoon walk with spectacular views or a picnic with their family. The existing buildings were renovated into a visitors centre which runs on clean energy. A hostel can also be found with unobstructed sea views from all sides and in full view of the magnificent sunrise.

Munxar cliffs

These cliffs offer a great hiking path on its own. As you look down beneath the white chalk limestone cliffs, one can observe the beautiful clear, turquoise sea this area has to offer. As you follow the path, carved inside the cliffs is a naturally formed stone arch. In summer, this magnificent window has become very popular with tourists, divers & many kayaking enthusiasts.

St. Thomas Bay

This bay offers the best of both worlds, between it's golden sandy beach to it's rocky shores.

It is quite wide, extending to what was known as Jerma Hotel to Marsascala Marina. Whether it is scorching hot or breezy, this location is very popular with locals living near by. In spring one can enjoy the fresh air of the green pastures and whole fields of blooming yellow flowers with a picnic or a long afternoon walk. In summer it is buzzing with activity, crowded beaches, water sports, boats & kayaks sailing the beautiful blue seas, bbqs and much more. One can also enjoy an ice cream or afternoon lunch in one of the delicious restaurants in the area.

From St. Thomas Bay we then made our way back home to Zejtun. You can continue the hike over to Marsascala Marina on to Marsascala Family Park ending in Zejtun. But that depends on your level of energy left. The terrain of the hike is relatively smooth & easy to walk. The duration depends on how many pitstops you take. We took quiet a few to take photographs and enjoy the stunning views. It may take you approximately between 4 to 5 hours maximum. Don't forget to pack water, snacks, sun protection & importantly your camera.
