Many cigarette smokers do not think twice before carelessly tossing away their cigarette butts on the ground, at times not even bothering to put them out. This article will tingle a bit those guilty practices many cigarette smokers tend to have.
Its amazing how much media & public adverts, campaigns can have an effect on people. Just recently many people have become environmentally conscious about single-use plastic. Paper straws & metal straws have replaced plastic ones. Sipping out of a plastic straw has almost become a crime. But no one has ever mentioned perhaps the most commonly discarded piece of waste worldwide- cigarette butts. And why is that ? Not only are they an eyesore but most importantly & what is most worrying is that they have a huge global impact on our environment & ecosystems because as they decompose they contribute to soil & water pollution that eventually affect wildlife habitats. When recklessly tossed into the environment, they dump not only that plastic but also the nicotine, heavy metals & many other chemicals they have absorbed into the surrounding environment. The plastic fibres in cigarettes which make 98% of cigarette filters are non-biodegradable hence they will not organically be broken down by living organisms.
According to the National Geographic , smokers around the world buy roughly 6.5 trillion cigarettes each year. That is 18 billion daily.

The artwork was perfectly nailed. They are colourful, innovative and modern. The cat & elephant are my two personal favourites. Men mostly go for the fish or elephant design.
The inside of the pocket ashtray is lined with a sponge aluminium frame which gives it its non-burning properties when switching off the cigarette. The outside is made of durable EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) & PVC plastic. The EVA is an elastomeric polymer which produces materials that have properties such as low-temperature toughness, stress-crack & UV radiation resistance, hot-melt adhesive waterproof properties amongst others which makes it ideal for this type of functionality.
How was this idea developed ? I had the opportunity to personally meet with the CEO of the company, one of the persons who is behind this great concept. Joice is a foreigner but has been living in Malta for a few years now. She likes it here & believes that the country has great potential. The idea emerged this June. Whilst lying on the beach with a few friends on a Sunday afternoon, seeping a cold drink & inhaling her cigarette she noticed the numerous cigarette buds discarded recklessly on the rocky shore. At that moment, she thought of this wonderful idea. After long hours of planning, trials & product testing, they released Pocket ashtrays as their first product. During summer, they hoped from one beach to another, promoting their product & raising awareness on this habitual crime.
